PRODUCTION NOTES

"Signore, let me be a composer! Grant me sufficient fame to enjoy it. In return I will live with virtue. I will strive to better the lot of my fellows. And I will honour you with much music all the days of my life!" It would seem the young Antonio Salieri's fervent prayer to God is answered. He becomes Court Composer to Emperor Joseph II in Vienna and pursues an illustrious career from which he achieves much public acclaim. But with the arrival at court of the miraculous virtuoso Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salieri's life is to change forever. "Until this day I have pursued virtue with rigour; I have laboured long hours to relieve my fellow men... solely that in the end I might hear your voice! And now I do hear it - and it says only one name: MOZART! Spiteful, sniggering, conceited, infantile Mozartt - him you have chosen to be your sole conduct!... So be it! From this time time we are enemies. You and I!... And this I swear. To my last breath I shall block you on earth, as far as I am able!"
