PRODUCTION NOTES

The background against which Moliere wrote Tartuffe was one of intense corruption and an overbearing interference in state matters by the Church. The final scene is a thinly veiled call to Louis XIV to limit the powers of the cardinals and to take back the controls of government. Our production of this play is set in modern day southern USA. Those familiar with the politics and social structures of this region may well be able to see the parallels in terms of the influence exerted by a wide variety of high profile religious leaders - both genuine and the more self-serving.
