PRODUCTION NOTES
Vampire begins with three girls in a nineteenth century Welsh parsonage,
and finishes with a cynically manipulated designer 'modern' funeral; there
is an implied link through the generations. Sex, death and the open door
left by the death of God all invoke the heroic and operatic winds that fill
the characters' sails. The stories comprise a nimble and
intermittently elegant threnody for The Ancestors.
I wrote it about forty years ago to skip from the middle of the (then)
previous century in fifty year hops. It always feels an enormous
privilege for me to see it done again. I discovered, writing it that the
actual creatures of the title make late and somewhat peripheral
appearances. We mortals have the edge on the undead: nothing salts a joke
better than our own actual mortality.
